On moving day, there are several tools you simply can’t do without — and a dolly is one of them. Dollies help you move extremely heavy items without the help of a crew. In turn, this not only makes your move go faster but it also eases the back pain that comes from carrying heavy boxes and furniture.
Moving companies usually offer three types of rental dollies that customers can use for any number of days. Each one has its own purpose and you don’t always need to rent all three for your move. The right dolly depends on the items you plan to move.
Utility Dolly
This is the all-purpose dolly. It works well for moving boxes, small furniture and appliances. For my move, I mostly used this dolly to move multiple boxes at once when loading and unloading the moving truck. Just remember that it has a 600lb capacity, so if you need to move extremely heavy furniture or appliances, you should look into using a different dolly.
Appliance Dolly
The name explains it well. This dolly is the best choice for moving refrigerators, washers and stoves. If you’re moving into a home where you need to bring in new appliances, this dolly makes it easy to move them. It also helps you handle them on your own without feeling worried about dropping anything.
Furniture Dolly
This is the only dolly in the group that doesn’t come with a handle. It’s a flat dolly with four wheels that lets you place furniture of any size on top. Once your furniture is loaded, all you need to do is give it a push. This dolly has a 1000lb capacity, so you can load almost any piece of furniture without worry.
If you want to take extra precautions when moving your furniture and appliances, use a furniture pad along with twine or mover’s wrap to cover and secure them. This will help protect them from getting dirty or scratched.
