Moving a couch through a doorway can look challenging but with the right preparation and technique, it’s actually manageable — just not always effortless. A typical sofa weighs around 200–350 pounds. Larger couches, like five-piece sectionals, can reach over 1,000 pounds. Even smaller options like loveseats which are made for two people, often weigh more than 100 pounds. Since lifting and maneuvering heavy furniture takes a lot of physical effort, many homeowners choose to hire professional movers for safety and convenience. But if hiring a moving company isn’t in your budget or you’d rather handle it yourself, here are a few helpful moving tips on how to get a couch through a door.

Assemble Your Supplies

Getting a couch through a tight doorway calls for a few basic tools. Depending on the type of sofa you have, you may need:

  • Tape Measure
  • Screwdriver (Flat or Phillips Head)
  • Pliers
  • Work Gloves
  • Moving Blankets
  • Stretch Wrap

Though not required, you might also want to get some furniture sliders and furniture straps. Sliders allow you to move couches without lifting them or scratching your floors, while furniture straps help spread the weight more evenly which reduces strain on your muscles.

Break Down Your Couch

Before you begin, take apart your sofa. Remove the cushions and unscrew any detachable pieces, such as the legs or armrests. This not only makes the couch lighter, but also helps protect your home and the upholstery. The more streamlined the sofa is, the less likely it is to catch on anything while you’re moving it. Keep small parts like screws and nuts in a Ziplock bag so they don’t get misplaced along the way.

Measure Your Doors, Hallways and Couch

After you’ve taken the sofa apart, measure its height, width and depth. Use the outermost points as your reference for each dimension. Then measure the height and width of the doors you plan to move it through, so you don’t waste time on doorways that are too narrow. Also check any tight corners behind the door. If you don’t, you could end up squeezing your sofa into a spot that’s too small to move it out of.

If you can’t find another path, think about removing your doors. Even when a door is fully open, it can reduce the doorway by about 1.25 inches. That may not seem like much but it can make a big difference when moving large furniture. Taking a door off is simple: place a nail under the hinge pin and gently tap it upward with a hammer until the pin comes out. Then slide the door sideways to lift it off the hinges. Once your couch is through, put the door back by setting it on the hinges and tapping the pin back into place. The whole process only takes a few minutes.

Ask for Help

Couches are too large to move by yourself. No matter how strong you may be, make sure you have at least one person assisting you. Bigger sofas might even need three or four people to move them safely.

Wrap the Couch

Moving blankets help cushion your sofa from bumps, protecting it from nicks, dents and scratches as you move it through your home. They also shield your walls, molding and doors at the same time. Depending on the size of your couch, you’ll likely need at least 2–3 blankets to cover it completely. Lay the blankets over the sofa so every part is fully covered, then secure them with 2–3 layers of plastic stretch wrap to keep everything in place.

Clear a Path

Once your couch is prepared, clear every obstacle from your route. Even small items can become tripping hazards.

Use Proper Lifting Techniques

Bend your knees to avoid putting strain on your back. Hold the couch from the base instead of the edges. Communicate clearly with your partner before lifting or setting the sofa down. Before you start moving, say which direction you’ll be going so you both move in sync.

Orient as Needed

There are three ways to move a couch through a tight doorway. Depending on your home’s layout, you might need to use all three.

  • Horizontal: Carrying the couch flat is the quickest and easiest method. You may need to turn it on its side when going through a narrow hallway but overall this is the safest and most stable way to move heavy furniture.
  • Vertical: Since most sofas are wider than they are deep, standing them upright helps you pivot through narrow doors. After lifting the couch onto one end, rotate the lower part through the doorway. Once halfway through, guide the rest of the couch behind it in a slow, steady motion.
  • Diagonally: Tilting the couch at a 45-degree angle often gives enough room to slide the front end around a doorway, with the rest following in a twisting motion. To avoid getting stuck, make sure there is enough space behind the door for the full length of the couch.

Remember to move slowly. Rushing can cause accidents. Take breaks whenever you need to regain your grip. If you have a furniture dolly, try rolling your sofa instead. You’ll still need at least two people to guide it but placing the couch on a dolly removes most of the heavy lifting and makes the job easier.

Reassembly

Once your couch reaches your new home, follow the same steps again. To reduce the chance of damage, bring your sofa in before moving smaller items. If you need to unload other boxes first, set them aside or place them in another room to avoid creating clutter. Plan your route carefully by measuring the main entrance and your interior doors, so you can choose the safest path. After carrying the couch inside, remove the moving blankets, reattach the legs and armrests, and place the cushions back where they belong. You’re done!
