When packing for a move, you’ve probably been told to label each box with what’s inside and which room it belongs in. That’s helpful—but sometimes, written labels are hard to see or read, especially during a busy move. A smart alternative is using color-coded packing tape to show where each box should go. Here are some tips if you choose to use this method:

  • Pick a different color of packing tape for every room. For example, use red tape for kitchen boxes and green for the master bedroom. Your kids might enjoy helping choose a color for each room. Don’t forget to assign colors for spaces like the master bathroom, guest bathroom, kids’ rooms, guest room, living room and laundry room. If you’re putting anything in storage, use a separate color just for that.
  • While packing, make sure you have plenty of each color of tape close by. You don’t want to pause everything just to run to the store for more. And using the wrong color because it’s all you have can make things really confusing later on!
  • Even if you’re using color-coded tape, it’s still smart to write down what’s inside each box on the flap. That way, when you move in and urgently need something like your pots and pans to make dinner, you’ll know exactly which box to grab.
  • Make a master list. Put a strip of each colored tape on a sheet of paper and write which room each color stands for. Then hang a few copies of this list around your new home so the movers know exactly where every box belongs.
  • Stick a piece of the matching colored tape on the door of each room. Movers and even friends helping out might not know which room is the kids’ or which one is the office or guest room. This simple step helps everyone know exactly where things should go.
  • Put tape on more than one side of each box. When movers are taking boxes off the truck, it’s frustrating if they have to turn each one just to find the tape. To avoid that, stick a piece of tape on every side. Just be sure the pieces are big enough to easily see the color.
