Moving with kids can be stressful but staying organized makes it easier. Here’s a simple list to help you get ready before the move.
Before the Move
School
- Gather your child’s school records.
- Note down the name and contact info of their new school.
- Look into new daycares — try to visit them in advance if possible.
- If you are moving during the school year, tell your child’s teacher and school counselor when their final day will be.
Health & Medical Needs
- Pick up prescriptions you’ll need during the move.
- Collect all medical records
- General doctor
- Dentist
- Eye doctor
- Keep medications, inhalers, allergy medication and other medical supplies with you instead of packing them on the moving truck.
- Check whether your current health insurance covers providers near your new home.
Social & Activities
- Plan a small goodbye party with friends — take some pictures for memories.
- Visit your child’s favorite hangout spots — take photos to remember them.
- Search online or ask around for kid-friendly places or events in your new city.
Packing
- Sort through their toys — decide what to keep and what to donate.
- Pack a small travel bag with essentials for the road.
- Set aside a few “important” items your child will want unpacked right away.
- Return any borrowed books or videos before moving day.
- Pack favorite bedding, pajamas, books, a nightlight and comfort items together in one first-night box.
- Avoid packing every toy too early. Leave a small selection available until the final day.
Moving Day Safety
- Keep children away from the moving truck, ramps, driveways, open doors, tools, stacked boxes and busy stairways.
- Tell the moving crew which boxes contain children’s bedding and first-night items so those boxes remain easy to locate.
After the Move Checklist for Children

Once you’ve settled into your new home, here are some things to take care of for your kids:
School
- Sign your child up at their new school.
- Take a tour together so they can feel more comfortable.
- Confirm the first-day schedule, transportation, lunch arrangements, school supplies and dismissal procedures.
- Update the school’s emergency contacts, home address and approved pickup information.
- Introduce yourself to the teacher or school counselor and let them know that your child has recently moved.
- Check in during the first few weeks to see how your child is adjusting socially and academically.
Health
- Find and visit a new pediatrician — it’s better to do this before your child gets sick.
- Update your address with your insurance provider and confirm which local doctors are covered.
- Save the locations and contact details of the nearest pharmacy, urgent care center and hospital.
Activities & Making Friends
- Look into local sports teams or fun clubs your child can join.
- Visit nearby parks and the public library — great spots for meeting other kids.
- Plan a simple family outing in the new neighborhood during the first week.
Join local parent groups or mom communities, especially on Facebook or WhatsApp — they can help you connect faster.
Emotional Adjustment
- Ask your child how they are feeling about the new home, school and neighborhood.
- Give them room to feel excited, sad, nervous or uncertain without immediately trying to correct those feelings.
- Continue familiar family traditions, such as movie nights, weekend breakfasts or bedtime reading.
Keep in Mind
A smoother move starts with thinking about your child’s everyday needs. Schools, parks, activities, and nearby essentials can all make a difference when choosing the right area for your family.
